How to disable a monitor display from extended display mode in Windows 7

So recently I upgraded my Dell Vostro 220s from Windows Vista Basic to the new Windows 7 Professional. I am also currently running a dual monitor setup but when I open my Warcraft III in a dual monitor environment, the graphics seems to lag and therefore I usually have to disable my secondary monitor.

In this article, you will learn how to disable a monitor display in Windows 7. The first step is to navigate to your desktop. Right click on your desktop and select Screen Resolution (Figure 1).

The Screen Resolution control panel will appear and here you are able to change the appearance of your displays (Figure 2).

Now select the monitor you want to disable, for this example I want to disable my secondary monitor (Monitor #2). After selecting the monitor, in the Multiple displays: field, select Show Desktop on 1 to disable monitor #2 (Figure 3).

Now click OK to set the change. After clicking OK it will ask if you would like to keep your changes. Click on the Keep changes button to apply the change or Revert if you would like to revert to your old settings (Figure 4).

Now your monitor display should be disabled from extended display mode. To reenable your monitor display, follow the same steps but in the Multiple displays: field, select Extend these displays for extended desktop display.

  • I cant seem to disable my extended monitor properly, even following those instructions.

I use a laptop with a standard LCD screen as my extended monitor. It works fine in extended mode but when I shut my laptop down and restart using a single display it would not run my windows without a CRT monitor attached.

So every time I want to use my laptop I have to find an old school monitor just to turn it on, which defeats the portability of a laptop.

    Help please. Thanks.

  • ^^ when you shutdown your laptop, do you change it out of extended mode first and back to a single display?
