How to Reset PS3 Video Settings from HDMI to AV

How to Reset PS3 Video Settings from HDMI to AV

A common issue on the Playstation 3 (PS3), when I first got my PS3 I plugged it into my parents LCD TV to try out the HDMI output display and was amazed with the graphics and detail that the machine outputted. However, after plugging it back into my own TV that did not have an HDMI input but only an AV input, I was not able to receive any video. In this post, I will teach you how to reset the video settings on your PS3.

Sony has included steps to reset the video output settings back to primitive settings where you may change them back to your optimum settings via the settings menu.

Step 1: Resetting the Video

First you will have to reset the video settings on your PS3 by following these simple steps:

  1. Make sure the PS3 console is off and displaying the red light on the power LED.
  2. Press and hold the power button for around 5 seconds until you hear a second beep. (Figure 1)

After this, your PS3 will power on with primitive video settings.

Step 2: Configuring to Optimum Video Settings

With your PS3 now on, you may now configure it run on optimum video settings suitable for your TV. In the main menu, scroll to the Settings tab and scroll down to the Display Settings option (Figure 2)

After selecting the Display Settings option, you will see the Video Output Settings has current Output Resolution set at 480i (Figure 3).

Select the Video Output Settings and choose the type of connector used on your TV (Figure 4). Currently I am using component cables and therefore I select the component option. Follow the menu and choose your maximum resolution your TV can support and select the type of audio output you will use.

With this complete your PS3 video settings should be reset back to optimum settings suitable for your TV.
